Work Experience

As part of our growing commitement to contribute for a wider community of ' Nature Explorers' we are keen to share our experiences. We are willing to facilitate the development of 'Nature Explorers' program in other schools, and spread the word about the numerous benefits gained through playing and learning outside in nature.

To assist with sharing our program and knowledge, we will be running a work experience program for those interested in being part of the Nature Explorers program.

To maintain the integrity of the program and to minimise disruption to the children the following needs to be consider:

1 work experience participants will be selected to participate one day a week
Work experience placements will only take place during terms 2,3 and 4 to allow the children to settle into the program
Work experience placements are open to all applicants, however, there will be a selection process including an interview to ensure an appropriate fit for the staff and the children and to maximise the benefit to the wider community

Lindsay Lehmann

Originally for the U.K and living in Australia for 14 years. I've always lived in the city, myself and my little family moved from Sydney 18 months ago to this beautiful place. I'm looking forward to the children introducing me to nature explorers and showing me the beauty of the bush. I look forward to meeting parents and children and being part of this amazing community programme.

Sara Holley

I'm a Mum of 3 and hope to give my children the wonderful childhood that I had. We had no back fence and yard that led out into the bush: days were spent there. My Early Childhood Journey of 15 years has led me to the Tweed and I'm keen to learn with the children more about our local environment as we go exploring together. I'm excited to be a part of this program in which the children learn through play, develop their practices of sustainability, assess risk and are constantly questioning

Nicola Smith

Niki has been teaching on Cape York for the past 6 years. The spectacular natural environments she was surrounded by ignited her passion for sustainability inspired her to undertake a Master of Environmental Advocacy to link her early years teaching with environmental education. Niki is passionate about play-based learning and believes that every child needs the opportunity to explore in outdoor environments so that they can connect with and learn through nature.

"My experience as a nature explorer volunteer has been a highlight in my 37 year career as an early childhood educator.

I feel privileged to have observed children who are learning to take calculated risks, problem solve, use teamwork and collaborate with their community with the aim to understand and care for our natural environment. Watching the children climb trees, roll down hills, use real tools and dance in the rain reignited the wonderful memories of my childhood.

Sofia and Kelly are phenomenal educators who show respect for each child's decisions and abilities. Children are learning at every opportunity, through every decision and through every discovery and there is not a single toy in sight. Nature explorers become confident, caring, capable and resilient learners who feel a sense of belonging to the group, their community and to nature.

Reflecting on this experience has given me renewed passion and inspiration to spread the nature explorers vision and philosophy. I wish every child could be a nature explorer, and every educator could feel the joy of sharing this rich learning experience in their career."
